The question of when to retire is an emotional, uncomfortable issue for many people so it needs to be put into the right perspective.
When you stop working, it is not the end of your life!
In many ways it's the beginning of the next phase. Surely this is just another stage in your life with just as many, or more, opportunities for personal fulfillment as any other period in your life?
There must be so many things that you still want to do, places you have always wanted to see and projects you want to tackle.
One of the most healthy ways to approach the decision when to retire is to look forward and not back. Sure we learn from life's experiences but we need to focus on the future and avoid dwelling in the past. The past is done and you most likely still have a good quarter of your life left to enjoy.
So make up your mind to enjoy this time and move forward. Enjoy planning for it and look with positive expectancy to the day you retire.
As difficult as it may be to contemplate, you are going to start losing friends and loved ones as you get older. These things are going to happen and one needs to be mentally prepared whilst still enjoying everything you have planned for when you retire!
A good exercise at this time of making the retirement decision is to update your personal mission statement. If you don't have one then take this opportunity to start one. A mission statement is a written declaration of what your life is going to be about and what you want to achieve.
Think big and don't be limited by what you've been … you can now make the decision of what you want to be.
Look at all the areas of your life like health and physical activities, hobbies and interests, reading and research topics, shared activities with your spouse or partner and perhaps even a home business opportunity.
A sense of achievement gives us a powerful reason to get up everyday and enjoy an ongoing sense of accomplishment.
You have the option. Either you let retirement happen to you or you get cracking and make sure that you take control of your life and have a say in making things happen during this potentially wonderful time.
